Partnership for Emergency Planning (PEP)
Presentation “How Breaches Really Happen”
by Jim Baird and Scott Burkhart of 10-D Security

Breach notifications have unfortunately become commonplace, as the news from the past few years has shown.  But the actual tactics used by attackers, from initial compromise to getting away with the “crown jewels,” are rarely discussed in detail.  In this presentation, we will look at cyber threats, the attackers themselves, their motivations, and then the tools and methods they employ to accomplish their goals.  A demo will be provided to show the chain of events, from the attacker’s first actions clear through to a network compromise. As different attack vectors are discussed, countermeasures and practical guidance on prevention will be given.  Attendees will come away from this session with a better understanding of how the attackers work, and how they can secure their systems and avoid becoming the attacker’s next victim.

Presenter: Scott Burkhart, Security Engineering Team Lead, 10-D Security

Mr. Burkhart has over 6 years’ experience in IT Security Administration in Fortune 500 companies.  Mr. Burkhart has a background working on the defender side of the fence and brings extensive technical experience to the team.  This understanding of attack and defense tactics helps to bring real value to our clients. His primary role is as Sr. Security Engineer, performing Cyber-Attack Simulation (Red-Team) Assessments and Penetration Testing and Digital Forensic Investigations.
